Saorsa – Four Bedroom Detached House
This large house is located in Gardenston Street, Laurencekirk. Saorsa (Gaelic for “Freedom”) is an individual build in the Gingerbread House style; built to high and exacting standards throughout by craftsmen and caring tradesmen who take pride in their work.
As the name implies, Saorsa has generous, wide open spaces for living. With 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, there is more to this house than meets the eye. If you are expecting a typical 4-bedroom house in an estate with small rooms, forget it! This build has the emphasis on providing a bright, warm and contemporary living space.
A spacious vestibule with cloakroom gives way to the stairway with a lightwell and gallery which streams copious amounts of natural light from above. The pair of double doors give access into the large open-plan living area with an 8kw multi fuel wood-burning stove and dining area. This runs the length of the house and turns the corner into the open-plan kitchen fitted with Bosch appliances throughout: Integrated fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, electric double oven and gas hob.
Two sets of patio doors to the rear of the property give access to the decking area and the south-facing garden.
A short corridor from the stairwell leads to the downstairs toilet with shower and large cupboard space and the utility room with a side door, disabled ramp, and a door into the garage. As well as the garage there is ample space for three parked cars on the lock block paving.
The upstairs landing forms part of the gallery leading to all bedrooms and the main bathroom ahead. To the right is bedroom 4 and the large Master bedroom (26 sq. ft), with bay window and en-suite shower room. Turning left from the stair are two further spacious bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower.

The Naming Ceremony
The name Saorsa (pronounced ‘soeursa’ with a vowel between ‘oo’ and ‘ee’ ) is Gaelic, and translates as Freedom. On May 1st 2015 Saorsa had a traditional topping out/naming ceremony with a blessing:
Smoke of air and fire and earth,
Cleanse and bless this house and hearth,
Drive away all harm and fear,
Only good may enter here.
A sprig of yew tree was also placed high in the rafters to ward off evil spirits.
